25 Word Pitch

Our Song

After weeks of research and looking around, the time has finally come. Me and Becky, have decided our song!

This song has been an idea for a while now, but we needed to make sure we have a clear idea for the video. What's our idea, I hear you say, You'll have to wait for the pitch!

Researching differernt songs

When researching i came across this song and the thought of a compleletly different idea of quite an sketcy video. Having a group of freinds around town and going to up to the public doing different and silly things. I would also have walking scenes which are sped up i think this would fit in well with the song as its quite an up beat song. We didnt chose this song because we thought we prefered the other song and had more inspiration for the other one. I thought we could have a few clips of the dancers going up to the public, showing that they are having fun. As the structure will be, at the start it will be building up so serious at the start and then when "walking on sunshine" starts playing we want to show the dancers having fun. So this would be something to add to make it seem like the kids are having fun.

Researching differernt songs

We talked about the different beats of the a song that we wanted and when in the music video we want it. So for example we wanted the beat to be quiet and slower pace at the beginnning. Thats why i liked this song i like the begining intro and the way it builds up. The reason why we didnt want this is because the beat after the first bit was very similar and all the way throgh and not up beat enough for us.

Music Ideas

When love takes over - Kelly Rowland
I really like this song, and I think that the beat in the chorus would work really well in the type of idea that we have. I can imagine that we would start off with a group of teenagers bored and then put a cd on and start singing to it. The idea that the beat would get carried on through everyone would work well with this song because it starts off slow and then builds up. It also has a beat which we could choreograph to which would allow us to have alot of dancing in, which would give us plenty of action in our video. The narrative would not necessarily link to the song, but with the narrative we would have, that wouldn't matter. Towards the end of the song, the beat slows down and then slowly starts to build up again which would allow us to maybe do some clips in slow motion. We would need one main girl to focus on in the video to make sure that we have someone who could lip sync to the song.

Hot & Cold - Katy Perry
Another song we really looked at was Hot & Cold by Katy Perry. This song is a bit of a different genre that anything else we have looked at because it is completely a pop song. The main thing I liked about this song was the beat in the chorus, and the fact that it wasn't just the chorus that had a noticeable beat in but the whole song. I think that if we were to use this song then we would have to make sure we had a narrative that actually fitted in with song because otherwise the lyrics of the song, which clearly have a narrative behind them, would be lost.

Right to the Start - Keisha Mair - Written by Luke Denny
This is a song which I wrote myself and had a good friend, Keisha to sing it for me. She goes to a music college and was given the backing track by one of her colleagues. We considered doing this song because it would mean I wouldn't have to worry about rights for the song because I own the lyrics and Keisha owns the backing track. Although it would take that element out of the way, we would have to come up with a completely new idea for the music video because it would not fit in with the 'teenagers being bored' idea. My idea for a music video for this would be to have the whole video focused on Keisha and a lad who would be around the same age as her. The video would centre around their past relationship and Keisha singing to him because they have broke up. This would be easily made, and the fact the would only be focusing on two people would make the production go smoother.

Standing Ovation - Becky Orton - Written by Luke Denny
This is another song which I wrote the lyrics for and Becky Orton, another good friend, created a melody to it and accompanied the song with her guitar. This is a completely different genre to what we have already looked at because it is accompanied by a guitar and not an actual backing track which has its pros and cons. A pro to this would be that we wouldn't have to worry about lip syncing, because Becky would be playing the guitar and singing the song which means it would be recorded live. A con to this would be that there would be then little we could do with a video. We could base the song on the stage in the hall, which would then go with the narrative of the song as the song is based on a 'Standing Ovation' which links to the theatre and a stage. Although I would of loved to use this song, someone in the previous year has used Becky, and it has not been successful because the genre of music she does, doesn't work with the type of video we are trying to create.

Moodboard

Here is a moodboard with ideas of Set & Costume.

Audience Profile

For our music video, we need to have sombody in mind who we are making our video for. It will be for people ages around 12 - 21. Our main person we are aiming for is 17 year old Lois.

Audience Profile Sheet Music Video

Luke - Busted Evaluation - Post Production

The final stage of creating the busted music video is the post production stage. This comes after all of the filming has been done. Again, we split up into groups and all edited the footage to see who would come up with the best edited version of the video. I edited the first third of the video and Abbi and Emma, working together, edited the rest. This allowed us to each do our own fair share of editing so we all got a chance to do it and contribute to the video. This stage is the stage which I have always found hardest and we actually realised we had one shot missing. From this I have learnt that I need to make sure that in my coursework I film each and every shot more than once to make sure each one has been done and that there is enough to edit.

Luke - Busted Evaluation - Production

After the pre production stage of the busted remake video, came the stage where we had to film the video. As the weather was nice on the first lesson of filming we decided to get straight on with the exterior shots because it could never be guarenteed that the weather would be decent on the next lesson. We each took our own 10 seconds to direct and then whoever wasn't in the shot, in this case it was Becky, who was playing Miss Mickenzie, would film the shots. We filmed some of the shots more than once so we had more footage to edit because then we could make the continuity continuis throughout the video. From this stage of the process I learnt that when the weather is how it is needed in your video that you must take advantage of that because when you next come to film the shot the weather could be different and the coninuity of the video would suffer. I also learnt that if you are working with someone else, which I am, then you can also share the load of directing and filming and take it in turns so you each get the most you can out of both exercises.

Luke - Busted Evaluation - Pre Production

Before producing, directing and filming our busted remake video. We split into pairs or groups of three and all took 10 seconds of the music video each to create a storyboard for. We watched the video about 5 times to make sure we knew it well. We then created our sections for the storyboard and brought it all together read to film the video in sequences the next lesson. From doing this it made me remember how much detail was needed in a storyboard. Literally, each second of the video needs to be storyboarded to make sure the final product comes out exactly how it is needed to be. When we initially split up to make different sectiongs of the storyboard, I didn't think it would work aswell because there would be many different visions in the film, but it takes off the stress of doing a whole storyboard, and works perfectly fine. Because I am working with someone else for this project, we could possibly do half the storyboard each to take some of the pressure from each of us. I have got alot out of this exercise because now I know there will be different soloutions in going about making the storyboard for our video and I have realised just how much detail is needed.

Busted Video - Cast

After decided on the props etc for our Busted re make video, we needed to decide on a cast for the video. The three boys who played the band members had to be able to lip sync to the music. So we chose people who did well and felt comfortable in the lip syncing activity.

The Cast for the video was as follows;

Miss Mackenzie - Becky
Charlie - Josh
Matt - Jack
James - Dan
Walking by Girls - Danni & Katie
Smiling girl - Luke (To add comedy to the video)
Focus shot on girl Dancing - Emma

Busted Video - Props

After watching the busted video several times, we made a list of props that we needed. This was so that everything seen in the busted video, would be seen in ours. We then all said what we could bring in from the list so that the burden didn't fall on just one person.
The Props list included;
  • School Books
  • Pencils/Pens
  • Guitars
  • Board & Board Pen
  • Paper
  • School Uniform & ties etc
  • Projector & Youtube clip
  • Costume for the teacher included a pencil skirt & high heels
  • Tables/Chairs to add to the mis en scene for the classroom
  • Cars to add in mis en scene if we use a carpark for exterior shots

Music Video Analysis

This video is Whitney Houstons 'I wanna dance with somebody'. The first thing that strikes us to this video is the song itself because it is upbeat and fast, which grabs attention to the viewer. This video would be easy to re create because a lot of it, the singer is standing in front of different backgrounds miming to the song. She interacts with what else is going on in the scene. It is a really simple music video because her voice is the main focus point in the video. We would not use the same idea for our video because it is too simple, and there is not much range in the camera shots. Whitney Houston at the time this video was made was at the height of her fame, so she never had to have big budgets to sell her music videos because she was always a big name in the music industry. If we were to create a video which is similiar we would not need a big budget to be able to recreate a similiar effect. Back in her day, Whitney would of been someone people admired so they use 'The Male Gaze' here to create attention towards her. This is something which we would be able to create but it would depend alot on who was in our music video.

This video is from the new fame film, and is the title song of the movie by Nautri Naughton. This video is exactly the type of thing we have in mind for our music video. The video is set in a typical performing arts school and in the streets of new york. It includes many different stereotypes, focussing on performers. Re creating this video would not be that hard because some parts are based in a dance studio, which we know we have one which we could use and the rest is on a street in new york. Obviously we would not be able to use a street in new york but it would be easy to use any street anywhere, to create the same kind of style. As the music of the song starts to build up, the action in the video does too which allows the viewer of the video to get more interested. The narrative in the video is about kids wanting fame, and the song in the video is perfect for that because it is exactly about that. We would like a music video with lots of dancing and action in because it keeps the viewer entertained. Nautri Naughton is also feautred as the object of 'The Male gaze' which as said before, would be something we would be able to create ourselves.

This is a music video by the Artic Monkeys and would be one which would be easy to recreate. Although, it is a video which doesn't inspire me. The reason for this is because it is not to the genre of music I would naturally listen to or the genre of music I would consider doing for my music video. This type of setting for a video would be easy to find a re create. I would describe this video as being 'Random' and that is something I don't like for a video. This is because a video should have a narrative. Our music video will have a very clear narrative which will also hopefully link well to the song which we later decide to do.
